Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

  • If you wish to attain the title Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Maine, you must first get a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
  • You must apply for your license and pass a criminal background check. You must also provide three current letters of recommendation from professional sources within the past year, two of the letters must be from licensed social workers at any level of licensure from any state. You must then apply for the title providing proof of education to the Maine State Board of Social Work Licensure.
  • Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Level Exam.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 25 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)

  • To become a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Maine, you must first get your Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
  • You must also provide three current letters of recommendation from professional sources within the past year, two of the letters must be from licensed social workers at any level of licensure from any state.
  • Then you will need to receive a passing score on an Association of Social Workers ASWB Master Level Exam.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 25 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • If you wish to hold the title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Maine, you must first get a Master or Doctorate of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
  • You must also provide proof of two years of experience accounting for 3,200 hours of which 96 hours must be consultation in a clinical setting if your Master of Social Work program had a clinical concentration. If the MSW program you took did not have a clinical concentration then you will need four years of experience or 6,400 hours, with 192 hours of consultation in a clinical setting.
  • Once you have completed and sent in your application you may apply with the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) for their Clinical Level exam. Once you pass the test you will be eligible to receive your new title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Maine.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 25 contact hours of continuing education.
