There are five different kinds of social work licenses in Oklahoma: Social Worker Associate (SWA), Licensed Social Worker – Administration (LSW-Adm), Licensed Social Worker (LSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

Social Worker Associate (SWA)

  • If you wish to attain the Social Work Associate (SWA) in Oklahoma, you must first graduate and receive a degree of Social Work degree from an Oklahoma approved Social Work program. You must pass a criminal background check.
  • You must then log 4,000 hours of supervised practice with 100 hours of supervision by an LSW or LSW-Adm in face-to-face educational supervision. The 4,000 hours must be over two years time or you may have equivalent part time experience if under the supervision of Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
  • Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Level Exam.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 16 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Social Worker – Administration (LSW-ADM)

  • If you wish to attain the title Licensed Social Worker – Administration (LSW-Adm) in Oklahoma, you must first graduate and receive a degree of Social Work degree from an Oklahoma approved Social Work program. You must pass a criminal background check.
  • You must then log 4,000 hours of supervised practice with 100 hours of supervision by an LSW-Adm in face-to-face educational supervision. The 4,000 hours must be over two years.
  • Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Advanced Generalist Exam.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 16 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

  • If you wish to attain the title Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Oklahoma, you must first graduate and receive a degree of Social Work degree from an Oklahoma approved Social Work program. You must pass a criminal background check.
  • You must then log 4,000 hours of supervised practice with 100 hours of supervision by an LSW or LSW-Adm in face-to-face educational supervision. The 4,000 hours must be over two years time or you may have equivalent part time experience if under the supervision of Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
  • Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Level Exam.
  • Once you attain your license, you will need to log 4,000 hours of supervised practice with 100 hours of supervision during those 4,000 hours.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 40 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)

  • If you wish to attain the title Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Oklahoma, you must first get a Master of Social Work degree from an Oklahoma approved Social Work program. You must pass a criminal background check.
  • There is no field experience requirement for this license.
  • You must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Master’s Level Exam.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 40 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • To become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Oklahoma, you must first get your Master of Social Work degree from an Oklahoma approved Social Work program. You must pass a criminal background check.
  • You must have at least two years of full-time experience or the equivalent for a total of 4,000 hours of post-graduate social work practice. This experience must be under supervision and the supervisor must be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LSCW). If you want to have clinical licensure you will need to have at least 3,000 hours of direct client contact. The direct contact includes any contact involved with treatment of client eg assessment and psychotherapy. The experience cannot include activities that are not therapy based such as travel, training or administrative duties.
  • Once you have completed and sent in your application you may apply with the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) for their Clinical Level exam. Once you pass the test you will be eligible to receive your new title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Oklahoma.
  • To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 16 contact hours of continuing education.
