There are four different kinds of social work licenses in Oregon: Registered Baccalaureate Social Worker (RBSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Certified Social Worker Associate (CSWA) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
- If you wish to hold the title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Oregon, you must first get a Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college or one in candidacy for accreditation. You will need to pass a criminal background check.
- To apply for this license, you must first log 3,500 hours of clinical social work practice. 100 hours of this must be supervised. Of the 3,500 hours, at least 2,000 hours must be in the form of direct client contact.Once you have completed and sent in your application you may apply with the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) for their Clinical Level exam. You must also pass the Oregon Jurisprudence exam.
- Once you pass the test you will be eligible to receive your new title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Oregon.
To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 40 contact hours of continuing education.
Registered Baccalaureate Social Worker (RBSW)
- If you wish to attain the title Registered Baccalaureate Social Worker (RBSW) in Oregon, you must first get a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college or one in candidacy for accreditation. You will need to pass a criminal background check.
- Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Level Exam and Oregon Jurisprudence exam.
- To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 20 contact hours of continuing education.
Licensed Master Social Worker (LSW)
- If you wish to attain the title Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Oregon, you must first get a Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college or one in candidacy for accreditation. You will need to pass a criminal background check.
- When applying for your license you must submit a plan of supervision to be approved by the board to attain 24 months of experience including 100 hours of supervised work. You may also submit proof of prior clinical work experience for consideration by the board to fulfill this requirement.
- Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Master’s Level Exam and Oregon Jurisprudence exam.
- To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 30 contact hours of continuing education.

Certified Social Worker Associate (CSWA)
- To become a Certified Social Worker Associate (CSWA) in Oregon, you must first get your Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college or one in candidacy for accreditation. You will need to pass a criminal background check.
- When applying for your license you must submit a plan of supervision to be approved by the board to attain 24 months of experience including 100 hours of supervised work. You may also submit proof of prior clinical work experience for consideration by the board to fulfill this requirement.
- You must then receive a passing score on an Association of Social Workers ASWB Clinical Level Exam. You may only take this test upon completing at least 75 hours of supervised clinical experience and successful passing of Oregon Jurisprudence examination.
