There are two different kinds of social work licenses in Pennsylvania: Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
- If you wish to attain the title Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Pennsylvania, you must first get a Bachelor of Social Work or Social Welfare degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
- You must provide two profession references from Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) or licensed health care professionals.
- You must also provide verification of 3,000 hours of supervised clinical social work.
- Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Master’s Level Exam.
- To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 30 contact hours of continuing education.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
- If you wish to hold the title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Pennsylvania, you must first get a Master or Doctorate of Social Work or Social Welfare degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
- You must provide two profession references from Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) or licensed health care professionals.
- You must also provide verification of 3,000 hours of supervised clinical social work.
- Once you have completed and sent in your application you may apply with the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) for their Clinical Level exam. Once you pass the test you will be eligible to receive your new title of Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Pennsylvania.
- To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 30 contact hours of continuing education.
